Health, Wellbeing and Support

Physical and Mental Health

Our physical and mental health are inextricably linked with our sense of wellbeing.

It has been demonstrated that having good (mental or physical) health is far more than just a lack of illness but includes a state of overall wellness (or wellbeing), for example how positive, content, resilient and happy we may feel.

The NHS.uk website suggests five steps that we can all take to improve our health and wellbeing.

One step they suggest is being physically active, and our beautiful parks and open spaces not only help provide an inspirational place for physical health activities but can also help with the other steps mentioned too.

Volunteering can help you to connect with other people, learn new skills and give to others, while taking walks in Nature and watching wildlife can help you to pay attention to the present moment (mindfulness).

Relaxation and Mindfulness

If you have poems, short stories, flash fiction, opinions, essays and artwork to share, submit them to Write On! via the Submit To Write On! page.

Free online games can be a great way to keep your mind occupied and your brain exercised, such as:

  • Scrabble – You can play it on your own and whenever you have the time
  • Matching games – Including nature-themed

Cost of Living Booklet

If you are finding it difficult making ends meet then please refer to this booklet, which has been delivered to every home in the borough of Barking & Dagenham.  In it you will find information about the support and help the council and its partners can give anyone who is struggling financially. The most important thing is to ask for help!

Foodbanks and Food Clubs

There are a number of food banks in Barking and Dagenham that can provide emergency food parcels to help people who are temporarily unable to provide for themselves. Some of them require you to obtain a voucher in order to receive a food parcel, so check with them before you visit.

With community food clubs you could reduce your food shopping bill by having access to roughly £20 worth of shopping each week.
